Job Description:
Reporting to the Assistant Dean, the Environmental and Wildlife Management Field Station Laboratory Technician assists teachers in the preparation, presentation, supervision, and evaluation of laboratory and outdoor activities. The Field Station Laboratory Technician is also responsible for the overall maintenance and repair of the laboratories, machines, equipment, and watercraft at the Environmental and Wildlife Management Field Station.
More specifically, but not limited to, the Field Station Laboratory Technician works in conjunction and consultation with other staff, the department coordinators and teachers, and completes tasks in the following areas:
- Supervises the Environmental and Wildlife Management (EWM) Technology students at the Field Station when no teachers are present;
- Provides technical support and services for indoor and outdoor laboratories, activities, and Field Trips;
- Assists teachers in the transportation of students and equipment;
- Prepares and performs sets-up/take downs of all laboratory areas with the necessary equipment, instruments, supplies, etc., as required;
- Collects, stores, and prepares specimens for laboratory work; cares for the plants, specimens, and species used in the laboratories and outdoor activities;
- As requested and guided by the teachers, performs demonstrations and monitors students during all pedagogical related activities in the field, classroom or lab;
- Oversees, supervises, and provides help to students in practice laboratories, and outside of laboratory and class periods, and applies the rules and regulations established by the department;
- Participates in the evaluation of students for professional conduct, laboratory evaluation, etc;
- Provides evening supervision of students and logistical support for Field Station operations, including driving students for food shopping and errands;
- Manages the students’ food budget and maintains detailed records of all expenditures;
- Develops a knowledge of, and is competent with, all equipment, machines, vehicles, etc.;
- Operates and supervises the safe operation of all equipment, vehicles, etc. and ensures that they are in good working condition;
- Troubleshoots, cleans, calibrates, repairs, and performs regular maintenance and repairs on equipment, machines, etc. and arranges for any necessary servicing and/or repairs, in conjunction with the program coordinators and the College;
- Maintains records of budgets, ordering of equipment and supplies, cataloguing of specimens, bird banding, etc.;
- Ensures security arrangements of the Field Station buildings and ensures safety precautions and procedures are in place and adhered to, including all water, boating, and canoeing activities, in conjunction with Teachers and the College;
- Assists in the maintenance of all Field Station premises, buildings, facilities, preparation rooms, resource and storage areas, and laboratories; keeps them clean, orderly, and secure;
- Contributes to the development and improvement of the Field Station space and facilities;
- Ensures compliance with security measures, health and safety standards, and WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) standards, during the use, handling, and storage of machines, chemicals, equipment, instruments, and facilities; tests the eye wash station(s) regularly and keeps a log;·
- Maintains an adequate supply of consumable goods as per teacher and department requests and needs, in conjunction with the program coordinators;
- Maintains and updates an electronic inventory of equipment and instruments, and tracks repairs, in a timely and regular manner;
- Trains and supervises occasional and student workers and monitors students for Team Leader activities;
- Reports all problems with buildings, machines, vehicles, equipment, water craft, etc., and broken and lost items;
- Oversees the resource areas and controls the borrowing of materials and items by teachers, staff, and students;
- Assists in the selection of equipment, etc;
- Assists with extra-curricular events sponsored by the College or Department;
- Attends department and college meetings as requested to provide input;
- Researches and prepares purchase requisitions and work orders;
- Works independently and collaboratively, as a team member with colleagues and students.
Other related tasks which fall within the scope of the classification of this position may be assigned.
Classification: Technicien ou technicienne en travaux pratiques (Laboratory Technician)
Schedule: Monday to Friday – schedule to be
determined before every semester (35 hours per week)
Overtime is
required during May to December every year, when the third year students are in
residence at the Field Station in Gore, Quebec. Possibility to work on main campus during the months of January
– April.
Profile
Qualifications:
- A Diploma of College Studies in appropriate field, or equivalent.
Conditions related to the specific position:
- Knowledge in taxonomy, ecotoxicology, and bio-remediation;
- Strong English and French oral and written communication skills (to be tested);
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel (to be tested);
- Ability to transport equipment for aquatic and terrestrial work such as canoes, boats, motors, dredges, chain-saws, generators, etc.;
- Orienteering and field first-aid skills;
- Current Wilderness Training and CPR Certification, an asset;
- Valid Quebec Driver’s licence, Class 4B (minibus for less than 24 passengers);
- Excellent communication skills, with strong ability to problem solve and deal appropriately with others;
- Willing to travel between field station and main campus as needed by the Department with advanced notice.
